Today, CMS announced it is broadening access to Medicare telehealth services for physicians so that beneficiaries can receive a wider range of services from their doctors without having to travel to a healthcare facility. This expansion benefit is based on a temporary and emergency basis under the 1135 waiver that was issued due to COVID-19.
Even with this additional flexibility in place, physicians must continue to adhere to the face-to-face documentation requirements and agencies must still get the documentation required for the face-to-face visit no matter how the visit was performed by the physician.
We are seeking additional information from CMS for further clarity on this issue and will send updates as we get them.
